A zero attraction effect in naturalistic choice.

چکیده

In the attraction effect, adding a dominated third option to choice set of two options can reverse preference for original options, and even increase one option’s share. This constitutes violation axioms regularity independence from irrelevant alternatives, which are core properties any model in utility each is stable across sets. Consequently, past 20 years, effect has driven development influential models multiattribute choice. However, Frederick, Lee, Baskin (2014) have recently claimed that only limited with numerical attributes, does not hold choices between naturalistic (e.g., snacks, movies) — claim would severely undermine its theoretical importance. Huber, Payne, Puto criticised Frederick et al.’s experiments, laying down criteria should be met by experiment wishing test real-world consumer choices. article presents first meets these criteria. The results show precisely zero effect.

The hidden-zero effect: representing a single choice as an extended sequence reduces impulsive choice.

Splurge on a vacation, or save for retirement? Sleep in late, or get up to exercise? The ability to resist a tempting, immediately available reward in order to obtain a larger delayed reward is the hallmark of self-control, and predicts important life outcomes, such as academic achievement (Duckworth & Seligman, 2005) and social adjustment (Mischel & Ayduk, 2004). Unfortunately, immediate rewar...

Colouration in crab spiders: substrate choice and prey attraction.

Australian crab spiders Thomisus spectabilis ambush pollinating insects, such as honeybees (Apis mellifera) on flowers, and can change their body colour between yellow and white. It is traditionally assumed that the spiders change their colour to match the flower colour, thus rendering them cryptic to insect prey. Here, we test this assumption combining state-of-the-art knowledge of bee vision ...

Same-Sex Gaze Attraction Influences Mate-Choice Copying in Humans

Mate-choice copying occurs when animals rely on the mating choices of others to inform their own mating decisions. The proximate mechanisms underlying mate-choice copying remain unknown. To address this question, we tracked the gaze of men and women as they viewed a series of photographs in which a potential mate was pictured beside an opposite-sex partner; the participants then indicated their...

Fatal attraction: Ventral striatum predicts costly choice errors in humans

Animals approach rewards and cues associated with reward, even when this behavior is irrelevant or detrimental to the attainment of these rewards. Motivated by these findings we study the biology of financially-costly approach behavior in humans. Our subjects passively learned to predict the occurrence of erotic rewards. We show that neuronal responses in ventral striatum during this Pavlovian ...

In this paper, we show that the under-representation of women in high-powered professions may reflect a coordination failure in young women’s marriage-timing decisions. Since investing in a highpowered career imposes time strain, it precludes early participation in the...
